San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala, won my heart after I went there to write. I stayed on, started some philanthropic projects, and ended up becoming a part of an Airbnb project. We built four floors, and the top one is mine (until it goes back to the landowners after our "land lease" is up--so they will have a full home and/or Airbnb business of their own). We provided tons of jobs during the build, and continue to provide jobs for locals who take care of the guests and property. A portion of every rental is donated to charity and continues to support development of jobs and professions in the Maya village.
