San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala, won my heart after I went there to write. I stayed on, started some philanthropic projects, and ended up becoming a part of an Airbnb project. We built additional floors on an existing property, and mine is the top (fourth) floor. The beautiful part is that after our land lease is up, it goes back to the Maya landowners so they will have a full home and/or Airbnb business of their own). We provided tons of jobs during the build, and continue to provide jobs for locals who take care of the guests and property. A portion of every rental is donated to charity and continues to support development of professions in the Maya village.
